Structuralist Poetics began as a doctoral dissertation at Oxford in 1968–9, when the structuralist revolution in France was underway. Structuralism promised an interdisciplinary reconceptualization of the humanities and the social sciences, centered on the notions of sign and structure. It not only raised general questions about what form future work on meaning and culture would take but also, for anyone interested in literature, posed questions about the future of literary studies. How would this broad reconguration of intellectual endeavor aect the study of literature? Structuralist Poetics, published in 1975, undertook to interpret and draw lessons from the variety of structuralist writings and to lay the foundations for a systematic study of literature. The goal was a poetics, an understanding of the devices, conventions and strategies of literature, of the means by which literary works create their eects. In opposition to poetics I set hermeneutics, the practice of interpretation, whose goal is to discover or determine the meaning of a text.
